23 Sep 2007 - New Nesting Site @ The Close (update)
New Nesting site @ The Close
New nesting site for The Crow (Sorry) The CREW, that small group of volunteers, whose habitat has changed over the years from the Log Cabin to George Sheppard Cabin. After many years have had to endure sub-standard accommodation of tents, caravans that leaked, finally using the George Sheppard cabin, which amongst all else is draughty and cold despite central heating being installed, and if you cross the floor it’s more like a trampoline.
Finally Thanks to a donation of £10,000, obtained from a donor through the work of Roy Morris, and additional funds from the County. Work begun in August 2007 on converting pocket site 1 to the new accommodation complex for our Service Crew.
It was noted that a Woodpecker had rejected the area after three attempts at nesting in one Silver Birch, but The Crew were ecstatic on the proposed nesting site. The Crew together with the Friends of Rough Close, cleared the site of trees, marked out the area, dug holes for the concrete foundations on which the buildings will sit. A 30’ cabin will arrive early September, for sleeping accommodation for senior crewmembers, an existing 20’ cabin will be moved and then used by the junior crewmembers, followed quickly with a 3 section cabin to be used for the kitchen and recreation area.
A couple of months of intense activity will follow, by crewmembers and the Friends of Rough Close will see the fitting out work completed, before The Crew move in and feather the nest. (How we will then get them up each weekend remains to be seen).
The management committee will in the meantime look at how we may once again bring the George Sheppard Cabin and the Scout Training Field into service.
